Gerardia savaglia - falso corallo nero


Gerardia savaglia, il cui nome comune è falso corallo nero, è un Antozoo non molto comune in Mediterraneo che abbiamo avuto la fortuna di incontrare a Portofino. Conosciamo meglio la sua biologia.

Forma colonie ramificate che possono raggiungere notevoli dimensioni (anche un metro di altezza). I polipi sono relativamente garndi, possono raggiungere i 3 cm, e di un colore giallo acceso. Lo scheletro è nero. Vive in fondali rocciosi e detritici ad una profondità variabile tra i 20 ed i 90 metri.
Cresce molto rapidamente, aumentando anche di 8 cm l'anno. Si tratta di una specie protetta e longeva: se ne conoscono individui di 1800 anni!

Pur essendo in grado di secernere un proprio scheletro corneo, questa specie ricopre in genere quello delle Gorgonie. L'insediamento avviene sia su colonie morte sia su quelle vive. I tessuti viventi di queste ultime vengono progressivamente distrutti da Gerardia savaglia.
